This term has different meanings depending on the context in which it is used:

In the context of dispute resolution, the formal document by which a claim is acknowledged by a defendant. For further information, see CPR 10 and Practice note, Responding to a claim: key action points.
In the context of family law, the formal document by which an application for divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership is acknowledged by a respondent.
