(Free access).
PLC Dispute Resolution has published Podcast, Costs management (Part 1), produced by JurisProductions.
In this podcast, HHJ Simon Brown QC, Michael Mendelblat of Herbert Smith and Beverley Barton, a PLC Dispute Resolution editor, consider:
  • The background to, and rationale for, the introduction of costs management pilot schemes.
  • Outcomes from the original Birmingham costs management pilot scheme, details of how it operated in practice and lessons learned.
  • Key requirements of the costs management pilot scheme that was extended to all Technology and Construction Courts and Mercantile Courts from 1 October 2011.
  • Early feedback from practitioners, including some useful practical tips.
Part 2 (which will follow shortly) will consider potential problem areas, the likely success of costs management initiatives, and what the future may hold. It will also highlight other proposed CPR changes that will require early consideration of costs, and provide details of how to provide feedback on the pilot scheme.
The time you spend listening to the podcasts can be counted towards your annual non-accredited Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) CPD requirement. You can claim a further half an hour's non-accredited CPD if you also complete the accompanying quiz. If you or your firm is authorised by the SRA, you may claim accredited CPD by listening to PLC podcasts and then having a face-to-face discussion about them. You can claim the total time of the session, provided it lasts at least an hour and the podcasts listened to comprise no more than half the total session. For full details, see the SRA website.
Podcasts on document retention and limitation will be published later this year.
